Airport
Though the karipur airport is situated in malappuram district, it is only 26.5kms. Away from kozhikode city. There is a massive expansion program for the airport to bring it to international standards. Now flights are being operated from kozhikode to the gulf countries. In the near future, Kozhikode will regain its past glory through the expansion of the airport, as the doors of international trade are being opened.
Ports
The district has an intermediate port at Kozhikode (including Beypore) & a minor port at Vadakara. The port of Kozhikode, inclusive of Beypore, is 144.84kms. north of Kochi. The coastline extends from Elathur cape down to the south bank of the Kadalundi river & treads roughly in a straight line. Beeper with its nearness to Feroke & Kallai, the industrial centres with many tile factories & saw mills & the Rayon Pulp Factory at MAvoor about 16kms. Upstream, offers prospects for great improvement. The port has 2 piers known as the north & south pier. The North pier is162metres long & the South pier is 182metres.
Beypore is situated at the mouth of the Beypore river & is approximately 10kms. South of Kozhikode. A wharf measuring 152m. in width is provided with 5 electric cranes of 5m. tonnes capacity each. A link road to the nearest main road has also been constructed.
Vadakara, another port of the district is situated about 19.31kms. south of Thalassery. Only small coasting steamers call at the port. There is no pier or jetty at this port.
The port of Kozhikode, Beypore & Vadakara are open to foreign trade. Kozhikode port is not completely closed to steamer traffic during the southwest monsoons, but whenever there is heavy rain, steamers do not call, as it is an open roadstead. |
