Lokanarkavu Temple

Lokanarkavu temple is located 5 kms from Vadakara. The three rock cut caves in the temple premises are artfully engraved with beautiful carvings and fascinating murals. The main temple, according to legend, is more than 1500 years old. The main deity here is Goddess Durga, with two adjacent shrines dedicated to the gods Vishnu and Siva. The annual festival of the temple is called Pooram.

 

The week-long festival begins with Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) and concludes with Arattu. The temple dedicated to goddess Bhadrakaali has great historical importance as Thacholi Othenan, the legendary martial hero of Kerala, used to worship here every day.

This is the only temple where a peculiar folk dance called Thacholikali is presented during festivals. The dance, performed during the festival resembles the martial art Kalarippayattu. Even today, all Kalarippayattu artists seek the blessings of the deity before their debut.

 

Velliyamkallu

The massive rock here forbade the Portuguese invaders as it offered the ideal footage to the Marrakas to counter attack the intruders. Once, the entire crew of a Portuguese war-ship was annihilated here. The rock with natural engravings is a real excitement.

 
Payyoli

This is again a beautiful beach, a favorite haunt of solitude-seekers, near Velliyam-Kallu.  It is a pleasure to watch the Sunset from here. The light house and the two piers leaping into the sea each of which is over a hundred years old, the lions park for kids and the marine aquarium for the kids and the grown-ups alike, all add to the pleasure.

 
Vellari Mala

The verdant landscape with a beauty of its own, holds aloft a sparkling waterfalls. Trekkers are naturally attracted here.

Vadakara is known as the birth place of Thacholi Othenan - the legendary hero of the Vadakkanpattu (ballads of North Malabar), Vadakara boasts a great martial tradition and was a flourishing trade and commerce centre in ancient times.

 
Thacholi Manikkoth

A Kalari belonging to Thacholi Othenan, the legendary hero of the ballad of Malabar called "Vadakkan Pattu" can be seen at a short distance from Vatakara. A monument and Kalari still exists at this place which is 3 kms away from Vatakara. Every year martial arts festival is held in the month of March or April.

There is a ruined fort in the town. Vatakara was the scene of many exploits of Thacholi Othenan, the hero of the ballads of north Malabar. A cattle fair is also held during February at Vatakara.

 
Birth Place of Kunjali Marakkar

 The Marakars were admirals of Zamorines, who valiantly resisted the Portuguese on the high seas. Kunhali Marakars built a fort on the southern bank of the Moorad river, which was subsequently completely destroyed by Portuguese with the help of Zamorins for various reasons. The place is known today as Kottakkal. It is 46 km. North of Kozhikode. A small hut that belonged to Kunhali Marakkar with collections of ancient swords, cannonballs and knives can be seen here.

 
Siddasramam

 Situated near the Payam Kuttimala,in Memunda, Siddasrama is a spiritual centre. Siddasramam has branches in Kerala as well as outside Kerala.

 
Memunda Madham Shiva Temple

It is very ancient nagakshethram in Kerala. It is the temple of Nagadevatha. it is situated east of Memunda town. Daily many visitors reaches from many part of Kerala.

 
Chendamangalam Theru Mahaganapathy Temple

This temple is located near to Chorode Railway Overbridge. The main deities are Ganapathy and siva, there is also one more temple associated with this main temple called the Bhagavathy Temple. The main deitie in this temple is Bhagavathy also known as Bhadrakali accompanied with the Naga Raja and Naga Rani. There will be a festival in third week of every January for more than three days.

 
Velliyamkallu

 A massive rock, Velliyamkallu associated with the valiant Kunhali Marakkar is located 13 km. off Payyoli Beach. The rock though much dreaded by navigators was safe ground for the Marakar to attack the invading Portuguese. The fisher folk look at it with awe and fear. However, it is worth exploring to see the beautiful figures nature has engraved on it. It was on this rock that Marakars killed the whole crew of a ship belonging to the Portuguese.

 
Sand Banks

Sand Banks is a famous beach which supplements the seaside beauty of Vatakara. This beach where Kottakkal puzha reaches the sea is a stunningly beautiful beach. There is a Bungalow of Birla opposite to the sandbanks beach. There are buses plying to the beach every five minutes from Vatakara.

Kottakal Bhagavathy Temple

Located in the heart of the town near the old bus stand, the temple is known for its festival called Thera. Thera is spread over three days starting on the next day of Vishu. The temple has 3 deities - Bhagavathy, Kali and Unnipranthan.

 
Thacholi Manikkoth Temple, Meppayil

 About one km in the east side of the new bus stand. Thacholi tharavadu (the original thacholi family home) is still preserved and the birth anniversary of thacholi othenan is celebrated here.

 
Vengoli Sree Maha Ganapathy Ayyappa Temple

Situated in a small beautiful village named edacheri. It is about 10km away from vadakara town.

 
Kuriyadi Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Kshetram

Situated in Vatakara beach near Chorode Gramapanchayath. Originally, the temple was within Valiyavettil house which is more than 800 years old. Annual festival is held in the month of Feb.
